Ping-Pong! (Political Cartoon Creation + Analysis)

Cartoon

In table tennis, two players pass a ball from one to the other, and back again, until someone misses the ball. Then, it is picked up again and used in another game. However, while this game is progressing, the world doesn’t stop revolving, nor do other things stop happening. Thus, when politicians play table tennis, nothing gets resolved, and it’s just another game of techniques and chances. From this political cartoon, we can see that the table tennis court is used as an analogy of the responsibilities that the government and Hong Kong citizens refuse to accept. Assimilation is used to exaggerate the facial features of the characters. Knowing the bias of this cartoon, we can therefore induce that the cartoonist is trying to criticize both sides for their ignorance and lack of ingenuity.

Some of the symbols used in this cartoon are the table tennis court, buildings, ping pong balls, and the rackets. The specific placement of the buildings in the center of the table tennis court is used to emphasize the subject of this cartoon. As the buildings are in between the two groups of people, the audience can infer that they are fighting over public housing. These buildings are getting taller and taller due to relocation, and the chief executive appears to deny all responsibility for these changes. The buildings also show the distance between the citizens and the chief executive as they are separated on either side of the table.

Ms. Solomon’s Feedback:

A: Don’t you think your label states the obvious? Wouldn’t a caption have helped? Most aspects of requirements met. Very creative concept and it was easy “to get” your concept. You knew your stuff. Loved the signature style. Excellent symbolism. Grammar error “tall”.

B: Meets deadline. In-depth analysis provided and enthusiastically put to audience. Your analysis was detailed and you knew your stuff. PPT well organized. Did you draw yourself?

C: Generally well analyzed. Presented without cue cards. Language has improved and is more academic in nature, yet suffers from grammatical errors. Much improved confidence. Good use of terminology.

My Reflection:

During this presentation I made use of the PowerPoint’s features and separated the different aspects of the political cartoon into frames. Attempting to use a relaxed yet academic approach, I tried my best to use the terminology I just learned and express that through my presentation. I feel like I picked the right cartoon because everyone in the room can relate to McDonalds and understand the concept.
